The Only Three Female Musicians, According to Many Male Music Critics | The Awl
My womansplaint of the day/week!
This post is hilarious.
I’ve always found this bias fascinating, although I haven’t spent a lot of time wondering why male music critics don’t write about more female musicians. I’ve always just washed my hands of the fact that I’m not part of the problem: I estimate that 70% of the artists I write about are women - which is down from when I first began writing about music five or six years ago, when it was closer to 100% (I was a writer at ROCKRGRL magazine during its last three years).
I grew up listening to radio-friendly pop (and still do) and then flirted with indie rock for several years after my first Sleater-Kinney show, so listening to women musicians has always been a habit and preference and I’ve tried to reflect that in who I choose to write about.
